In Hard West, things start out pretty ordinary, but as the game progresses, things start to become more supernatural. It's based on the traditional American Wild West, but adds in elements from horror and the occult. However, a number of features serve to differentiate Hard West:įor Instance, the game is set in the " weird west", a setting I had never heard of before. The combat in the game is turn-based tactical squad combat, very similar to XCOM: EU or the recent Shadowrun titles. I just started playing this about a week ago and I'm really enjoying my time in it. This game started out as a successful Kickstarter, but I hadn't heard of it until a few months ago. I'd say a 7-8/10 is pretty damned accurate. The best aspects are the unpredictable main aspects that you can't plan for spoiler and the bad aspects involve a somewhat pointless choice spoiler Something like "Do you want to go into the haunted cavern and grab the priceless artifact, or grab a bag of marbles by the door?" Obviously, if you grab the artifact, you're going to get some sort of ailment or other for your team, making combat tougher, but you also MIGHT get a weapon you actually want, rather than a pretty good harmonica pistol that is pretty cheap at the gunsmith (clearly this didn't happen to me), or 200 gold that you can easily make elsewhere without a status ailment.Īll in all, it's a pretty great game. There are lots of random events and difficult choices, but many of them have the illusion of difficulty.

The "roleplaying" aspect is a little half assed, but I do appreciate the effort. I do wish, however, that you were allowed more posse-mates, as it's frustrating to be forced to turtle in order to make sure your "essential" characters survive. There are objectives that seem doable, but actually make the mission way harder, and the odds are stacked perfectly between difficult challenge, and impossible. The missions within scenarios are incredibly difficult, and require a lot of planning, and a bit of luck to beat 100%. However, there are definitely areas that are a tad lacking.Ĭombat is the strength by far. The tone is fantastically dark, and the narrative is so god damned weird, I love it.

I absolutely love XCOM and Wasteland 2, so this was a no brainer for me.
